SONG: Tohono O'Odam Basket

—for Will Inman

Gray-green bands of yucca define
the way of bleached grass extending
from his feet, this man stitched in
Devil's Claw black entering
the maze of desert colors.

I'itoi, Tohono O'Odam call him
Elder Brother, and weave the story
of his wandering through the changing
pattern of a land where all paths lead
back to self, to center. Look the damp

spot of your shadow too
dries as you reach it, a trail
going on because you follow
in this labyrinth of light
everywhere guides us home.
